New Program Highlights Yellowstone National Park in Winter

For National Park visitors information we are highlighting a PBS program about
winter in Yellowstone National Park.

NATURE \"Christmas in Yellowstone\"
PBS Stations
November 19, 2006 8:00PM
November 20, 2006 1:00AM

Christmas in Yellowstone depicts wintertime deep within Yellowstone National Park.
NATURE follows in the snowy footprints of Yellowstone\'s red foxes, spies on the
predatory play of wolves and elk, and climbs into the den of a grizzly bear that
gives birth to two cubs while deep in hibernation as captured by author and
photographer Tom Murphy in "Christmas in Yellowstone."

Yellowstone National Park is a joy to visit any time of the year. In the autumn and
winter there are some closures. Fall weather is unpredictable and roads may be
closed temporarily by snow or other weather conditions. Snow tires or chains may be
required. Beginning December 20, 2006 all roads are open to oversnow travel.
Oversnow travel refers to vehicle such as snowmobiles, snowcoach, etc.

There is an abundance of winter activities at Yellowstone. Yellowstone National
Park is one of the only national parks that allows snowmobiles. There are certain
regulations for snowmobiling that must be followed in order for everyone to be able
to enjoy themselves. All snowmobile operators in Yellowstone National Park must
possess a valid motor vehicle operator\'s license. It is important for all
snowmobilers to always be prepared for emergencies and be alert for snowdrifts in
some areas or sections of bare pavement, especially in thermally-influenced areas.

Other winter activities in Yellowstone include cross-country skiing, and
snowshoeing. These are wonderful ways to see the park sites. In addition Warming
huts will be open at Canyon, Fishing Bridge, Indian Creek, Madison, Old Faithful and
West Thumb. All warming huts, except Old Faithful, are open 24 hours a day; the Old
Faithful Warming Hut is open during daytime hours only. Canyon and Madison warming
huts have light snacks and hot drinks during the day; vending machine snacks are
available anytime at all warming huts except Indian Creek and West Thumb to make
your trip a pleasurable experience.
